Shut-Off Pneumatic (RD-1023) and "2" and "4" Reverse
On the center casting (RH-1 02) at the bottom with the hoses connected to it leading from the tracker bar you will find the SHUT OFF PNEUMATIC. At the end of the race this pneumatic is collapsed by the opening of the SHUTOFF or CARRIAGE RETURN VALVE mentioned in preceding paragraph which short circuits the seven horse tubes leading from the tracker bar (by short circuiting we mean exposing the tubes to the outside air and opening vent line to valve box) and stops any further movement of the horses, at the same time collapsing the pneumatic (RH-1016), and returning the carriage to the starting position. On the top of this SHUT OFF PNEUMATIC are two small pneumatics known as the "2" and "4" reverse pneumatics. You will note that when a "2" or "4" pay-off takes place, one of these small pneumatics will open causing a short circuit of the vent in the reverse tube underneath each of these small pneumatics causing the rolls to reverse. The rolls will reverse on a "2" pay-off in one direction, and on a "4" payoff in the opposite direction. If the "2" pay-off takes place while the roll is running in this direction the roll will not reverse, but if a “4” pay-off takes place the roll will reverse, and vice versa. This action can take place at any time, thereby breaking up the combinations on the roll. Each hole in the roll is a start or finish of a race, and the breaking up of the combinations is necessary to prevent any regularity.
