Coin Slot's Guide to Paces Races 7
Roll Assembly
The rolls (RH-111) are operated by a chain leading from the clutch at the upper end. You will note that the chain has one or more lugs protruding, which engage with cam (RH-215) operated by pneumatic (RH-1016) at the end of each race and when these lugs engage with the cam, the clutch slips and allows the machine to operate without turning the roll. It is necessary that the clutch be free enough to slip without putting an excess strain on the lugs, but tight enough so that the rolls will turn steadily; otherwise the horses will run in jerks. The clutch is equipped with a setscrew which can be adjusted for more or less tension. The lugs on the chain are used to break up the combinations on the roll. It is necessary that friction spring (493) has enough tension to keep the paper tight on the tracker-bar. If the paper becomes loose it will fall away from the tracker bar causing the vacuum to escape and allow the rolls to reverse back and forth and the horses will not receive the benefit of the entire roll. The friction settings must not have too much tension on the side of the roll, otherwise the clutch will slip or. tear the paper. If the paper roll becomes ragged on the edges, the tracker-bar is out of line and pulling the paper to one side. This is a very fine adjustment and should not be attempted unless absolutely necessary. You can determine this by seeing if the tracker-bar is straight in line with the rolls and pulling the paper evenly. The spring cam (494) holding reverse lever (RH-112) should have proper tension to hold the gears in mesh on either the upper or lower spools. Excess tension will cause the failure of the roll to reverse and the paper will run off the roll.
Air Cleaners (RD-276X)
These will be found on the Rubber Tubes behind the Tracker Bar. They are equipped with a small screen which catches lint from the roll, etc. The cleaners are made in two parts and should be pulled apart, removing the screen end and blown out about once every 30 days. Otherwise horses may run sluggishly due to the clogging of the screens in the cleaners.
