Vave Box
Directly behind the POWER PLANT, you will find the VALVE BOX, which might be termed the CENTRAL STATION. This consists of an upper and a lower section; between the two is an AIR CHAMBER. When the machine is in operation, the air is sucked out of this chamber through a tube attached to the POWER PLANT, creating a vacuum. In the lower section of the valve box, there is a series of POUCHES-one for each inlet covering its particular function. Low pressure or vacuum is above the pouches and when the outside air is transmitted through inlet tube, a pouch is raised.
The upper section of valve box contains the valves; these valves are so arranged that they seat at the bottom, on the lower valve seat (RH-235X), due to there being low pressure or vacuum in the AIR CHAMBER under these valves. When a particular pouch is raised, the corresponding valve is also raised, seating at the top, on the upper valve seat (RH-853), which causes the vacuum to be carried from that point to the corresponding pneumatic connected to it.
For convenience, we have used GREEN tubing for the VENT or SECONDARY LINES, and RED tubing for VACUUM or POWER LINES. For example, to make this clear, let's take number 1 horse: as the roll passes over what is termed as the TRACKER BAR (which is the bar directly behind the paper), you will find attached nine rubber tubes. The first and the ninth tubes are the REVERSE TUBES that reverse the paper roll. The other tubes are for the horses I, 2, etc. Every perforation in the paper represents a jump of a horse, and the holes permit the air to rush in through the tubes to the pouch directly under the valve for the corresponding horse, which in turn raises the valve. The vacuum then causes the pneumatic underneath the ratchet bar to collapse by sucking out the air, which in turn moves the ratchet bar one notch and carries that particular horse that distance. Every pneumatic movement throughout the entire game is just a duplicate of this action.
The VALVE BOX contains three rows of valves: the seven in the front row are for the seven horses reading from right to left; the center row is for the pay-offs, 2, 4, 8, 12, 16 and 20, numbering from the left to right. The third row are OUTLET VALVES to operate the dial spinning pneumatic, reverse pneumatics, etc.
